UNDERSTANDING HOW TO READ THE BIBLE

The Bible is mainly divided into the Old Testament and the New Testament.

The words in the Bible are also called scriptures. They are a record of God’s word, written by people God chose to give His messages to everyone. Examples of these people are Moses, Caleb, the prophets, the judges, the kings, and the disciples in the New Testament (2 Timothy 3:16, 2 Peter 1:21).

Before the earth was made, the scripture says it had no shape and was empty. Darkness was over the deep waters, and the Spirit of God moved over the surface of the water (Gen 1:2).

When God created the first man and woman, Adam and Eve, they eventually disobeyed Him. Because of this, the Bible tells us that humans lived without God until the time of Moses (Gen 1:26, Gen 3:6, Gen 3:9, Eph 2:12).

In the Old Testament, God’s plan to bring people back to Himself was carried out through Moses. God appeared to Moses and told him to tell Pharaoh to let the Israelites go. He also appeared to Moses to give the Ten Commandments and set out the law (Exodus 9:1, Exodus 20:1-17).

Before God gave the Ten Commandments and the law, the Bible says people had gone astray. They no longer knew God because of the sin of Adam and Eve, as all humans inherited a sinful nature from them. The Bible tells us that human wickedness was so great that people’s thoughts were always evil (Gen 6:5, 1 Corinthians 15:45).

At that time, the commandments and the law were established to show people that their actions did not match God’s nature. Their purpose was to change people’s minds and behaviour back to how God intended, and to point them towards what would happen later through Christ (Gen 6:5, Colossians 2:17).
