Romans Chapter Six illustrates the battle between our old man and our new man.
The old man is the body of sin we were slaves to before we accepted Jesus Christ into our lives (Romans 6:6).
The body of sin in this context is when we are walking according to the desires of our flesh (Romans 6:12).
It is important to understand what are the works of the flesh. The works of the flesh are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries (Galatian 5:19-21).
In Romans Chapter Six, Apostle Paul stated that when Jesus was crucified, we must reckon our flesh to be dead to sin (Romans 6:6).
We must note that since we have accepted Christ into our lives, sin has no dominion over us because we are now baptised into death with Jesus (Romans 6:3).
Since we reckon our flesh to be dead with Jesus through baptism, we must also reckon to be alive with Him through ressurection (Romans 6:5).
In other words, our sinful nature (flesh) is dead and our spirit man is alive to God through righteousness in Jesus (Romans 6:19).
It is important to understand the difference between walking according to the flesh and walking in righteousness?
Walking according to the flesh is when we are yielding to the desires of our soul and our flesh (Human soul & body) (Galatians 5:19-21).
Walking in righteousness is acknowledging the presence of the Holy Spirit. The scripture confirms that the moment we are born again, we receive the presence of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:14).
We must also understand that the Holy Spirit is the source in which we can walk in righteousness and not as a result of our own efforts (soul) (Galatians 5:16).
To walk in righteousness, we must submit to the leading and guidance of the Holy Spirit (John 16:13).
Stay blessed and be encouraged
