MENTAL STRONGHOLDS

Mental strongholds are patterns of tbought that originate either from carnal, repetitive behaviors outside the Word of God or through demonic influence (2 Corinthians 10:4-5, Romans 6:13, Romans 6:16).

At their core, strongholds are thoughts that interact between the mind and the brain (2 Corinthians 10:4-5).

Neuroscience aligns with this understanding: the brain contains physical cells called neurons, and the interconnected activity of these cells constitutes what we know as the mind.

Consider this analogy—like a keyboard (mind) inputting information that appears or is stored on a monitor (brain), our thoughts give instructions to our brain.

When we entertain thoughts not aligned with God’s Word, we direct our brain to build the neural networks neuroscience describes—and what scripture identifies as strongholds. Additionally, evil spirits express themselves through human thoughts and minds (2 Corinthians 10:4-5), projecting their nature into our thinking. Over time, these patterns form neurons that solidify into strongholds, dictating behavior even when a person desires to stop.

For instance, someone who repeatedly thinks about smoking or drinking alcohol will develop neural pathways that become a stronghold, making it difficult or seemingly impossible to break the habit.

But thanks be to God, who has delivered us through Christ! In the next blog, we will explore how to pull down these strongholds and walk in complete freedom.
