Man has three parts: spirit, soul and body (Gen 1:26, Gen 2:7). God made man in His image – this refers to our spirit (Gen 1:26). Our body lets us live and interact in the world (Gen 2:7, 2 Cor 5:8).
When we accept Jesus as Lord and Saviour, God’s Spirit comes to live in our spirit (1 Cor 3:16, Eph 1:7). One way to fellowship with the Holy Spirit is by speaking in tongues, following His leading and living righteously (1 Cor 14:2).
Scripture says those who speak in tongues talk to God, not people (1 Cor 14:2). Our spirit prays with the Holy Spirit when we do this (1 Cor 14:2, 1 Cor 14:14). While our mind is not active during this prayer, we should also pray with our mind (1 Cor 14:15).
When we pray in tongues and with our mind, God’s word is revealed to us as it flows from our spirit to our mind (Eph 1:18). Jesus told the Samaritan woman that whoever drinks the water He gives will never thirst – it becomes a well of life within them (John 4:14). This well is the Holy Spirit.
Jesus also said that believers will have rivers of living water flowing from them – this means the Holy Spirit (John 7:38-39). When we drink from the Holy Spirit in our spirit by speaking in tongues, God’s word becomes alive in our mind (Eph 1:7, John 4:14, John 7:38-39).
We must submit to the Holy Spirit’s leading and live righteously to fellowship with Him this way and receive revelation (Gal 5:16).
