The woman at the well said to Jesus, “You Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship” (John 4:20). In the Old Testament, the place to worship God was tied only to a physical location. But when Christ died for all and shed His blood, the Spirit of the living God now dwells within our spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16, Matthew 27:50).
Jesus responded, “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth” (John 4:23). Jesus went further to explain that through His blood shed on the cross, and by our faith in Him, the Spirit of God will dwell within our spirit—bringing about perfect union and fellowship. He described this saying, “Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water” (John 7:38), where “heart” here speaks of our spirit. This means that the Spirit of God, in perfect union and fellowship with our human spirit, reveals the things of God to our spirit. This revelation then flows into our soul and body, and is made manifest in the natural—just as rivers of living water flow forth.
One of the ways these rivers of living water flow from our spirit is through speaking in tongues. As Scripture says, “He who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God” (1 Corinthians 14:2). This is where true fellowship and revelation flow, like living water, from within.
