UNDERSTANDING PRAYER

The Scripture says that God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth (John 4:24). This verse helps us understand that true fellowship with God begins in the spirit.

We are created as a spirit, possessing a soul and living in a body (Genesis 1:26; Genesis 2:7). These Scriptures mean that our spirit being in touch with the Spirit of God is what prayer truly is. How can our spirit be in touch with the Spirit of God? The book of 1 Corinthians asks: “Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” (1 Corinthians 3:16).

The way to connect our spirit with God is through speaking in tongues. For the Scripture says: “He who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries” (1 Corinthians 14:2). This Scripture confirms that when we speak in tongues, we are speaking directly to God — that is, in the spirit, we are praying in agreement with God.
